A little more than a two-hour flight from the continental U.S., Puerto Rico is a perfect Caribbean destination for Americans. A blend of Spanish, Indian and African influences, this island has tropical forests, sandy beaches and an incredible dining and nightclub scene. When you visit Puerto Rico you can cover the whole island by car with day trips, from the historic Old San Juan, the designer stores and hotels of Condado, hiking and zip lining in El Yunque Rainforest and the small-town charms of Poncé.

I had the opportunity to stay in the Condado area of San Juan where there are many lovely hotels right on the beach.  Dorado is also a good location on the beach and very close to the airport.  Once you venture out of San Juan there are many great options including bed and breakfasts and Paradores, as well as 3, 4 and 5 star hotels.

The best thing for Americans is that they can visit the Caribbean but avoid the long lines at Customs and leave their passports at home!

Things Not to Miss in Puerto Rico:

• Zip line or hike El Yunque rainforest
• Take out an ATV or go Horseback riding at Carabali Rainforest Park
• Ride the free hop-on, hop-off trolley in Old San Juan
• Explore the caves at Parque de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy
• Paddle through the Bioluminescent Bay off Vieques
